Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH), 2025

Canada’s HealthADAPT program—launched between 2018 and 2022—strengthened national capacity for climate change adaptation health by supporting ten provincial, territorial, and regional health authorities. Tailored to address local vulnerabilities (from wildfire smoke in British Columbia to vector‑borne threats in Northern Indigenous communities), it combined technical and financial support, stakeholder engagement, and equity‑centered planning. Key outcomes included improved understanding of regional health risks, development of climate‑informed adaptation plans, and establishment of a national Community of Practice for knowledge sharing and collaboration. Health Canada also published a six‑step vulnerability and adaptation workbook to guide future assessments. As the initiative enters its next phase, it continues to foster adaptive, low‑carbon, and resilient health systems across Canada.
