Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH), 2025

Iraq has developed a comprehensive health adaptation plan Iraq under its Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP) framework to bolster resilience against climate-sensitive health risks. This strategy outlines climate-health integration through vulnerability assessments, climate-informed disease surveillance, and capacity development across ministries and local health authorities. The initiative includes establishing interagency coordination platforms, mainstreaming climate considerations into national health policy and infrastructure planning, and tailoring adaptation interventions for vulnerable populations exposed to heatwaves, water scarcity, and vector-borne diseases. Emphasis is placed on multisector data sharing, early warning systems, and stakeholder-driven governance. This forward-thinking adaptation model positions Iraq to systematically anticipate and mitigate climate-health risks by strengthening institutional frameworks, building technical capacity, and promoting equitable, evidence-based decision-making.
