The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) is the meteorological authority in Hong Kong, China responsible for monitoring and forecasting weather, issuing warnings on weather-related hazards, and providing climate services. Over the years, the weather and climate services provided by HKO have evolved to meet the increasing needs of various sectors, and to enhance natural disaster risk management. In collaboration with other government departments, tertiary institutions and social enterprises, HKO has been studying the impact of weather on public health in Hong Kong, with a focus on thermal stress and infectious diseases.
Collaborative studies on the spatial characteristics and health impacts of extreme heat events in Hong Kong.
Study of the seasonal characteristics of influenza A and B activity in Hong Kong and explore the possible approaches in predicting the influenza activity.
Project to develop a model for predicting the Ovitrap index in Hong Kong using the actual weather observations and climate model prediction data for reference by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).
Developing global/regional heatwave risk alert based on ensemble prediction system outputs and heat-health impact data available in the public domain.
