Health In Harmony (HIH) is a quickly growing planetary health organization. HIH is currently investing in an operational capacity to scale its successful climate justice programming alongside rainforest communities across Earth’s tropics. HIH Global consists of approximately 30 positions, half of them in the US and the other half across the globe. The HIH affiliate sites in Brazil and Madagascar are quickly developing an HR acumen within their teams, relying on HIH Global for consistent procedural advice. Recruiting and retaining highly competent, mission-aligned staff is essential to HIH’s performance in this critical decade. As such, the Director of Human Resources is a key leadership position in HIH’s growth and ability to achieve its mission in alignment with the organization’s values. The HR Director will serve as a primary HR strategic partner to HIH affiliate sites in Brazil and Madagascar advising on the best way to align the local legal framework with the HIH values and duty of care. This position is an essential partner, service provider, and enabler for the Programs, Research, Development, Operations, Finance, and other teams within HIH Global. The person in this role will: Design, execute, and be the final responsible for the strategic elements of our growth related to HIH Global international Human Resources management and the organization’s Internal Control Environment (i.e., HR administration, legal & compliance matters). Oversee all aspects of talent management by establishing internal control environments that support the team to achieve strategic objectives while aligning with industry best practices, and maintaining HR compliance with relevant laws and regulations in order to manage and mitigate risk. Successfully manage the global HR Department, in alignment with HIH values, including managing payroll, benefits implementation, compliance-related filings, systems implementation, etc. Work closely with the Senior Finance Director regarding legal compliance and audit functions. Serve as a member of the Leadership Team.

Description

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic HR Leadership & Talent Management:

  • In all affiliate sites (Brazil, Madagascar) and HIH Global countries where we work and employ staff (US, UK, EU, Liberia, India, Canada, and growing), and with a strong and explicit commitment to a Duty of Care framing: develop and implement standard operating procedures and contractual procedures related to the management, safety, physical security, and thriving of Health In Harmony’s people, including systems, policies and practices that ensure equitable and compassionate recruitment, onboarding, learning, job satisfaction, and retention of diverse and talented staff; and (when necessary) just termination.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement a competitive compensation policy, rooted in Health In Harmony values, including running payroll and managing benefits in (currently) four countries, and multiple states in the US. Lead and manage the expansion of hiring capacity to new jurisdictions as necessary.
  • Establish and oversee organizational policy and practice for staff learning and development programs that support career growth and knowledge-sharing among global teams.
  • Improve support through information sharing and mentoring of managers, and oversee the organizational policy and practice for performance management.
  • Execute annual hiring plan for the organization, supporting hiring directors, managers and supervisors across the organization with the schedule, tools, and systems needed to recruit and manage teams.
  • Manage employee relations, conflict resolution, and workplace ethics in collaboration with the Leadership Team.

Internal control/ HR policy and procedural environment (Administration, and Regulatory/Compliance):

  • Securely communicate HR data across  the organization
  • Mitigate enterprise risk exposure through an explicit focus on HR compliance according to relevant laws, in the USA and in the countries where we work.
  • Lead the development of appropriate internal HR systems and protocols to ensure organizational compliance and adherence to deadlines across labor laws, privacy and security laws, financial regulations, and governing bodies nationally and internationally, contractual obligations; all staff insurances, and risk management; in partnership with the Senior Finance Director.
  • Lead HR technology and data-driven solutions for workforce management.
  • Manage HRIS platform contracts and coordinate with account managers as required.
  • Oversee the development, negotiation, tracking, renewal, and management of staff contracts, offer letters and consultant agreements;
  • Keep abreast with the latest trends in HR compliance and administration management.
  • Support, advise  and mentor HR Managers in the HIH affiliate sites in Madagascar and Brazil, including on best practices in HR policies and compliance, and support their salary benchmarking efforts every 2-3 years

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 10 years of demonstrable success in overseeing human resources, and leadership roles; including 2+ years of experience working in an international context in a remote work environment.
  • BA in Human Resources, International Relations, Business Administration, or similar (MA or equivalent experience desirable).
  • Proficiency in intercultural communication, with a high degree of respect and compassion, is essential.
  • Commitment to equity, transparency, and supporting a diverse and international team; experience navigating global equity issues in human resources policies.
  • Experience designing and implementing new processes and systems, with a focus on onboarding teams to new protocols, processes, and policies.
  • Experience with Google Workspace, HRIS (Gusto or similar), and project management software such as Asana.
  • Experience managing a department and staff team.
  • High degree of detail-orientation, organization, and systems and strategic thinking.
  • Comfort and ability to work in an emergent and dynamic environment.
  • Entrepreneurial, humble, and resourceful.
  • Experience living and traveling in low- and middle-income countries is preferred.
  • Proactive, clear, and kind communicator and leader.
  • English fluency is required; French, Brazilian Portuguese or Spanish fluency is preferred.
  • Passion for the HIH mission.

Salary

$125,000 – $125,000 per year
