Climate change is increasingly affecting the health of people in every country. Actions to tackle climate change are falling short of international commitments, and the window of opportunity to achieve the commitments of the Paris Agreement is closing. However, a robust response to climate change today could still deliver transformational and immediate health benefits, and a thriving future for all.
The Lancet Countdown Oceania Regional Centre
The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change, is an independent, international research collaboration, that works to track the evolving links between health and climate change globally, regionally and nationally, in partnership with The Lancet and the World Health Organization. Its aim is to inform a robust response to climate change that protects and promotes human health. Following a successful first phase of work, the Lancet Countdown brings together almost 300 researchers from nearly 100 universities, research institutions and UN agencies world-wide, within its global and its six regional centres. Its global secretariat is based at University College London (UCL).
The Lancet Countdown Oceania Regional Centre is one of the six Lancet Countdown regional centres, hosted by Macquarie University (https://lancetcountdown.org/oceania/). It publishes an annual health and climate change indicator report (in The Medical Journal of Australia under the title of the “MJA-Lancet Countdown”) and other research and policy-focussed reports, runs report launch events, and engages extensively with the media and its policy partners. In the exciting new phase of the Lancet Countdown, the Oceania Regional Centre has taken on an expanded scope of work aligned with the broader collaboration’s increased ambition.
About the role
The Centre is looking for a Research Fellow who will play a central role in its research activities. The Research Fellow will work closely with the Director of the centre, the new Policy and Communications Manager for the centre (also currently being recruited), and with other researchers within the centre around Australia and the region and across the broader Lancet Countdown collaboration (both global and in other regional centres). The Research Fellow will support the Centre Director to coordinate the academic activities of the Centre, including supporting the academic collaboration in the production of the annual indicator report (including by providing editorial and technical input), supporting the academic authors in the development and refinement of the indicators, and supporting the refinement of the Lancet Countdown’s indicator frameworks.
