Home | Service Provider | South African Weather Service (SAWS)

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and a primary provider of weather and climate-related information within South Africa, as legislated in the South African Weather Service Act, 2001 (Act No 8 of 2001 as amended). The SAWS act was amended in November 2013 (Act No. 48 of 2013), extending the organization’s mandate to include responsibilities in terms of air quality monitoring. Additionally, SAWS continues to implement its functions in terms of section 11 of Chapter 3 of the Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998). As a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), SAWS adheres to international meteorological standards and offers two distinct services: government-funded public good services cross various sectors (health, energy, hydro and agrometeorology) and paid-for commercial services such as aviation.
